Welcome to Futurepast

The Futurepast site is designed to serve as a resource for management executives and professionals who are responsible for implementing and maintaining management systems. The information it provides is organized primarily by speciality (e.g. environmental management, safety and health management, or quality management) and, if applicable, by sector (e.g. chemical industry).

For information about our on-site training seminars, please click here.

You will also find pages on interdisciplinary topics, such as leadership and communications.

On our "Free Information You Can Request" page, Futurepast provides a convenient form for requesting previously published articles on relevant topics as well as current Futurepast product brochures and flyers. On this same page you may subscribe to our series of occasional Futurepast client briefings. You may also use our Contact Us form to provide feedback or ask us a question.

On this website you will also find hotlinks to our Futurepast Publications ordering pages. We accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

You are also welcome to visit our archives, where we retain selected pages describing Futurepast projects and activities from previous years.

Mission and History

Futurepast’s mission is to help clients during periods of growth and transition. Our training, consulting, and auditing services are particularly suited to organizations whose objectives include:

  • exercising leadership in environmental stewardship
  • proactively managing greenhouse gas assets and liabilities
  • reducing worker lost time, illness and injuries
  • improving product and/or service quality and customer satisfaction
  • reducing defects and errors
  • improving sales and profit margins
  • enhancing organizational effectiveness

Futurepast specializes in assisting clients who seek to achieve or maintain registration to the internationally recognized ISO 14001/RC 14001 and OHSAS 18001 environmental and safety and health management system standards, and to the ISO 9001 quality management systems standard. ISO standards are consensus-based standards developed through Technical Committees under the auspices of the International Organization for Standardization, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The RC14001 specification was developed by the American Chemistry Council; OHSAS 18001 by the British Standards Institute.

Management

RC 14001
Responsible
Care 14001

Organizations--and their customers--are increasingly concerned about environmental issues. For such organizations, the ISO 14001 international standard provides a comprehensive approach to environmental management.

In the chemical industry, ACC-member organizations are choosing between RC 14001--an enhanced version of ISO 14001--and RCMS, the Responsible Care Management System. Both systems add safety and health to environmental management system requirements.

SOCMA member organizations are implementing their trade association's "ChemStewards" program. Futurepast supports ChemStewards as an approved provider of audit services.

Experience has shown that organizations can improve both their environmental performance and their bottom-line results with ISO 14001, in either its "regular" or "chemical industry" flavors.

ISO 14001
Clarifications of Intent

The ISO 14001 environmental management system standard was initially published in 1996. Organizations with experience using it have sometimes pondered what the original intent of the standards writers was. To assist users, clarifications of intent are provided by the responsible ISO 14001 technical committee in the U.S. To read these clarifications, please click on the link to your left. Since the publication of the Second Edition in 2004, some clarifications written for questions asked about the first edition of the standard have been deleted, others revised. New clarifications related to language introduced in the second edition of ISO 14001 have been added.

Greenhouse Gas
Emissions Management

Business leaders and government officials in the United States and around the world are paying closer attention to the problems associated with increasing emissions of greenhouse gases, which are widely believed to be associated with global warming and climate change.

Futurepast is engaged in the efforts to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and increase removals of CO2 from the atmosphere. Futurepast's president, John Shideler, is a U.S. Expert to ISO Technical Committee 207, Subcommittee 7 on Greenhouse gas management and related activities. Predecessor working groups to this committee published ISO 14064 in 2006 and ISO 14065 in 2007. Subcommittee 7 is now developing ISO 14066 and is considering writing a standard on the calculation of greenhouse gas "footprints".

Futurepast offers the following services in greenhouse gas management: consulting to companies wishing to develop accurate inventories or "balance sheets" of their greenhouse gas emissions and removals, training of company personnel in inventory management and verification techniques, support for project development to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and obtain marketable GHG offset credits, and auditing services, including verification of inventory reports and validation and verification of project plans and results.

In addition to supporting the principles of sustainable development and preparing their companies for anticipated regulatory constraints, business leaders have recognized that effective management of greenhouse gas emissions can also result in improved energy efficiency and heightened competitiveness. OHSAS 18001
Health & Safety
Management

Protecting worker health and safety is another management concern with bottom-line implications. While ISO has not published an international standard covering this important topic, organizations may wish to benchmark their existing systems to the second edition of OHSAS 18001 published by the British Standards Institute in 2007. To learn more about OHSAS 18001, please click on the link to your left.

Quality Management
ISO 9001--The Foundation
for Quality Management

A credible quality management system is increasingly a requirement for doing business at home and around the world. Since 1987 ISO 9001 has provided a common standard for measuring an organization's implementation of basic quality management principles. The year 2000 revisions made ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 a "consistent pair" of standards that is designed to help organizations improve their quality management systems. Futurepast consultants can help you at any stage of the quality journey, from first implementation to application for local, state or national quality awards.
