About John


John Shideler has twenty-four years experience as a management consultant. He specializes in environmental, health and safety, and quality management systems design and development. His sectors of experience include oil, gas, and coal; chemicals and plastics; transportation; automotive; services; and publishing.

Mr. Shideler is a US expert to ISO Technical Committee 207 (Environmental Management Systems). He is co-chair of the US Technical Advisory Group's SubTAG 7 on Greenhouse Gas Management. He has represented the United States as a US Expert on Working Group 5 on Climate Change and Subcommittee 2 on Auditing.

He is RABQSA-certified as an Environmental Lead Auditor and as a Lead Auditor for Responsible Care Management Systems, an environmental, safety, health and security management system developed by the American Chemistry Council. He is an ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 lead auditor for three ANAB-accredited registrars in the United States, and serves for one as Greenhouse Gas Program Manager. He is also certified as a third-party auditor for ChemStewards, a program of the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA).

Mr. Shideler developed Futurepast's training courses in environmental management, health and safety management, quality management, and management systems auditing, and provides training worldwide in these subject areas.

Mr. Shideler serves as Futurepast's Project Manager for management systems services, including ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 9001 design and implementation, and greenhouse gas inventory management and project development.

Some highlights of Mr. Shideler's international experience include:

  • Assisting a chemical company in eastern Ukraine with implementation of an ISO 14001-based environmental management system.

  • Assisting an oil and gas exploration company in the Caribbean with the implementation of an ISO 14001-based integrated safety, health and environmental management system.

  • With Futurepast's teaming partner, the Global Environment and Technology Foundation, he conducted an ISO 14000 awareness seminar in Moscow in October 1997. He co-presented the seminar with Joe Cascio, Vice President of GETF and then-chair of the US Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee 207 (responsible for ISO 14000);

In the 1990s Mr. Shideler designed and conducted policy seminars for high-level and mid-level government officials from Russia and Ukraine for the US Agency for International Development. Examples include:

  • a seminar on ISO 14001-based environmental management systems for Ukrainian managers, conducted in the Czech Republic (2001)

  • a seminar on environmental policy for high-level Russian officials (1997);

  • a program on worker and community transition for Ukrainian officials, in support of the 1995 G-7 Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine on the closure of the operating reactors at Chornobyl (1996);

In April 2001 Mr. Shideler conducted a seminar on environmental management systems sponsored by the Academy of Quality in Kiev.

Since 2003 Mr. Shideler has conducted training seminars in the United Arab Emirates on environmental, health and safety management systems and related topics for a UAE-based training company.

In 2004 he served as Examiner for the United States Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia.

 


Education and
Professional Activity


Mr. Shideler earned his PhD degree at the University of California, Berkeley. He is an associate member of the American Bar Association.
